Do you feel safe at work?
Companies face plenty of threats in today's market that we, as employees, are constantly aware of – from competition to the economy. But, what about other security risks that may not be as foreseeable, if at all predictable? Do you feel that your company has prepared for certain threats that may cause physical harm?
A new CareerBuilder survey, including responses from 3,000 full-time workers, reveals how employees feel about safety and security in the workplace. While an overwhelming majority (93 percent) say they feel their office is a secure place to work, many participants expressed concern when asked about specific threats.
How prepared is your company?
Most businesses develop plans for fire, floods and weather-related disasters early on. After all, according to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, an estimated 25 percent of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster. So, it's no surprise that information on these plans are readily available – causing employees to feel a higher sense of security.
However, when it comes to threats from people intent on physical harm or digital hacking – things that we are all hyper-aware of in today's society – surveyed employees showed some significant concern.
In both cases, nearly 1 in 3 (31 percent) workers feel that their workplace is not well-protected from those who would seek to do damage through physical or technological means. And about 40 percent say they do not believe their employer has an emergency plan in place for such an attack.
What can you do to help?
Chances are someone at your company has already developed a plan for some form of threat that may worry you, but just didn't get the word out. If you don't feel protected, speak up and ask questions of your IT or facilities teams that may be responsible for such emergency preparedness plans. You may just spark an idea to create something new that may protect others from harm.
Everyone should feel safe and secure at their place of business – especially considering the amount of time we spend there.
Do you feel safe in your office? What would you change?
